The Original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel
Description
An account of the resource
The original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel began as two hotels, the Waldorf and the Astoria, built by feuding cousins William Waldorf Astor and John Jacob Astor IV in 1893 and 1897 respectively. They were located on Fifth Avenue, where the Empire State Building stands today and were built based on specifications by proprietor George C. Boldt so that the two hotels could be connected by what came to be known as Peacock Alley.
Much like its modern counterpart, the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel set a new standard for service and luxury, establishing itself as the social center for New York’s well-to-do and attracted notable visitors from around the world.
The images in this collection cover the original Waldorf-Astoria during the peak of its popularity.

The Original Goldsmith Clock, World's Colombian Exposition, Chicago, 1893
Description
An account of the resource
This is a photograph of the original Goldsmith Clock which was featured at the World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. This clock was a gift from Queen Victoria as a way to show the friendship between England and the United States.
After the exposition ended, the architects of the fair were left with a huge financial burden. To alleviate this problem, they decided to sell all items that were on display in the fair. John Jacob Astor IV purchased this clock to place in the lobby of the original Waldorf hotel. By the 1931 re-opening of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue, the clock was installed and has been the focal point of the main lobby ever since.
You will notice in this photo that the Stature of Liberty figurine is missing; this component was added later on as a gift to John Jacob Astor IV from France to signify their friendship with the United States.

Waldorf Astoria Park Avenue
Description
An account of the resource
The Waldorf Astoria we know today occupies an entire city block bounded by Park and Lexington Avenues, and 49th and 50th Streets. It has stood as a paragon of architectural beauty and revolutionary first-class service since its opening in October of 1931.
In building the Park Avenue Waldorf Astoria, the atmosphere, traditions, and prestige of the old Waldorf-Astoria were preserved and transferred to a structure that incorporated the innovative design and technology of the Twentieth Century. Architects Leonard Schultze and Fullerton Weaver made use of the Art Deco style to combine traditional elegance with modern functionalism.
The images in this collection present many of the outstanding architectural and decorative features of the Waldorf Astoria and provide a glimpse into the transformation of the hotel’s décor over its eighty-year history.

Description
An account of the resource
When the decision to build a new Waldorf=Astoria Hotel was made, the managers and investors of the new hotel were most emphatic that the atmosphere, traditions, and prestige associated with the old Waldorf=Astoria be preserved and transferred to a structure that incorporated the innovative design and technology of the Twentieth Century. Architects Leonard Schultze and Fullerton Weaver realized that the Art Deco style emerging in New York during this era was the perfect way to combine traditional elegance with modern functionalism.
The Waldorf=Astoria we know today occupies an entire city block bounded by Park and Lexington Avenues, and 49th and 50th Streets. It has stood as a shining, preeminent example of Art Deco design since its opening in 1931.
This collection features photographs and graphic renderings that document the architectural and decorative details found all around the Waldorf=Astoria. The majority of photographs cover the Façade, Main Lobby, Park Avenue Foyer and Starlight Roof.
