Mrs. Jean MacArthur attends the Grand Ballroom restoration, 1983
MacArthur, Jean Faircloth
Black and white photograph depicting the General’s widow, Mrs. Douglas MacArthur, and General Manager Joseph Rantisi in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel on August 5, 1983. For decades Art Deco ornamental grilles, part of the Grand Ballroom’s original design scheme, had been concealed by 30-foot canvas murals, the removal of which (by workers on 30-foot-high cherry pickers) marked the turning point in a $2 million restoration of the famous space. The murals were later donated to the Christ Church at Park Avenue and 60th Street in Manhattan.

"The Starlight Roof - Mural Decorations by Victor White"
Mural painting and decoration
Black and white photograph depicting the murals in the Starlight Roof at the Waldorf=Astoria from the 1935 publication "The Waldorf-Astoria" by Richard Averill Smith.
The mural decorations of the Starlight Roof are the work of the American painter, Victor White. The walls at the ends of the garden are golden-hued mirrors bearing tropical motifs in red and pale green. On the walls of the central portion and dance floor of the room, White created colored-glass mosaics depicting tropical plants, flowers and birds against sand-colored plaster.
