This correspondence from 1964 describes the origins of the Martini. According to this evidence, a man by the name of Mr. Martinez visited the original Waldorf Astoria Hotel sometime in the 1890s and suggested this drink to a bartender at the hotel. This drink was originally named the Waldorf Astoria Cocktail but was eventually changed to the Martini.
