“Peacock Alley…â€
Title
“Peacock Alley…â€
Description
Black and white photograph depicting Peacock Alley from the 1935 publication "The Waldorf-Astoria" by Richard Averill Smith.
"Peacock Alley of the new hotel has little similarity to the old one, except in name… It is, of course, a meeting place and, for those waiting, presents enticing wares through the vitrines of nickel-bronze…"
Referenced by Lent's 1934 publication: "In the Waldorf of today, Peacock Alley parallels Park Avenue... Its walls are paneled with French burl walnut inlaid with ebony. Pilasters on the walls are of French rouge marble, with capitals and cornices of nickel bronze. In curly maple cabinets that space Peacock Alley at intervals, leading New York merchants display their wares for inspection."
