• Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, was a British politician and statesman known for his leadership of the United Kingdom during the Second World War (World War II)
• He is widely regarded as one of the great wartime leaders. He served as Prime Minister twice (1940–45 and 1951–55)
• In December of 1931, Churchill was hit by a taxi while crossing Fifth Avenue. After a week’s hospital treatment, Churchill was a resident of the Waldorf for two weeks as he recuperated
• Churchill’s first recorded appearance at the Waldorf was a ballroom event at which he was introduced by Mark Twain. During the Boer War Churchill was captured and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp, but within a month he made a daring escape. Hunted through Pretoria with a bounty on his head, he hid in mines and railway cars, eventually to return to England a hero
