Title

South Palm Garden--The Waldorf

Description

"'marvelous ways of living and luxuries hitherto unattainable'. Even before revealing the marvels of the combined Waldorf-Astoria, Boldt managed to impress upon New Yorkers certain fastidious prerequisites of the higher life.  To dine in the the  Palm Room, white tie and tails were mandatory for the gentlemen, and of course, evening gowns were 'de rigeur' for the ladies.  This caused a flutter among the rich and well born but this decree made a table in the Palm Room as desirable as a box at the Metropolitan Opera and almost as difficult to secure"

Black and white lithographic image depicting the South Palm Garden at the Waldorf from the 1903 promotional publication assembled by George C. Boldt, then manager and proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria.
